The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management contributes to sustainable solutions for technical challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences.

The Department of Multi-Actor Systems (MAS) focuses on large-scale, complex systems with interacting technological and institutional subsystems. To understand the dynamics of such multi-actor systems, MAS researchers use theories, models and methods rooted in various scientific disciplines, ranging from physics, engineering, and operations research to sociology, social psychology, public administration, and law. The MAS department’s research aims to develop innovative concepts, methods, and tools for understanding, supporting, and designing multi-actor decision-making and coordination.

The Policy Analysis section focuses on problems that are characterised by the presence of actor interdependencies and uncertainties. The section represents a methodological core of the faculty, in research as well as in education. The section provides a variety of analytic methods and approaches, and connects systems analytic and modelling perspectives to actor-based processes and institutional perspectives on engineering, decision and policy making. The work of the section spans different domains with strong research portfolios in the areas of water and deltas, energy and transportation systems.

Job description The Professor of Policy Analysis is the chair of the Policy Analysis section. The section concentrates on analytic methods that combine engineering and natural science perspectives with institutional and behavioural science perspectives in a multi-method approach for systems analysis, design and evaluation. An important theme is decision making under uncertainty; approaches being explored are adaptation pathways and robust decision making. Methods such as game theory, actor-network modelling, and systems modelling offer analytic perspectives on the multi-actor context. ICT developments allow for new methods of computer experimentation and for sensemaking of big data. The chair is expected to lead and manage a group of dedicated scientists, and to take responsibility for part of the section’s teaching.

Requirements We are seeking a candidate who is currently working on multidisciplinary issues and is fascinated by the challenge of integrating knowledge from different domains and designing intervention strategies for effective policy making. The candidate should have: • proven research performance in the field of policy analysis, or a closely related field, • an extensive network in related research communities, • a strategic view on the further development of the field, • an affinity for application of both qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches, • excellent teaching skills and an interest in educational innovation.
