The School has a distinguished record of research in comparative public policy, national and international governance and political behaviour, and seeks to build upon these strengths. Applicants should have produced scholarship of the highest international standards, held high-value research grants, and demonstrated leadership commensurate with the level of appointment sought. Successful applicants will contribute to leadership within the School and University, possibly taking on the role of Head of School at some point in the future.

In the most recent independent national assessment of research in Politics and International Studies (Research Excellence Framework 2014), the School was ranked 1st in Scotland and 6th in the UK on research intensity (a measure that takes into account both the quality of research and proportion of faculty who are research active). The School is highly international in terms of research focus and faculty profiles, with 29 faculty members from 12 countries. Its research is marked by its practical relevance as well as academic excellence, exemplified in the work of the European Policies Research Centre in the School, which conducts applied policy research for national governments and international organizations. The School also has well-developed undergraduate and graduate programmes, including the MSc in Public Policy, the MSc in International Relations, and a doctoral programme.
