Background to PPN The Public Policy Network is an annual meeting of academics from Australia and New Zealand working in the area of public policy. It is based in political science but interdisciplinary in its approach to a wide range of policy issues. There is no formal membership. However, an informal steering group has been formed consisting of the past three Convenors of the annual conference, to ensure some continuity in the academic ethos underlying PPN. A mailing list is passed between conference Convenors.
The annual conference is held at the end of January / beginning of February each year. It is a single-stream, relatively informal conference, where participants have the opportunity to present work at either early and mature stages of development. Work of an empirical or case-study nature is welcome, along with contributions that are more conceptual or theoretical in orientation. Some time in the program is set aside for discussion of research agendas, issues associated with policy teaching, and announcements of recent and upcoming publications. It is desirable to include an opportunity for a workshop specifically oriented towards supporting the work of graduate students on the day before the conference.
Meeting Conventions • Single-stream, relatively informal conference over two days • Minimal power-point presentations; handouts if needed • Option of delivering refereed papers for those who require this • Welcoming drinks on the evening before the Conference – Evening of Wed. January 21st • Last afternoon to include a session for Public Policy Network Business member voting • PPN Forum makes decisions about future conferences • PPN Forum may or may not decide a conference theme • Conference Convener advised by committee of past three Conveners. There will be a presentation at the PPN dinner of the Geoff Anderson Best Paper Award decided by committee (for which the prize is a bottle of McLaren Vale red).
