The Department of Political Science employs 15 full-time faculty and maintains a small but highly competitive and nationally recognized graduate program (MA and PhD), as well as a high quality undergraduate major (BA). UNM is a Carnegie Doctoral/ Research-Extensive University and US/DE Minority public university. As the state's largest university, UNM serves a diverse student population of over 40,000 at its main campus and Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque.

The RWJF Center for Health Policy aims to increase the number of Hispanic and Native American PhD graduates in the social sciences with expertise in health policy. According to the Center's mission, these graduates will participate as leaders in achieving progressive changes in US health policies at the national level. The Center serves as a resource for national health policy research and will provide a voice for Hispanics, Native Americans, and other underrepresented groups in health policy discussions. In its educational and research goals, the Center fosters collaboration among the social science departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (Political Science, Sociology, and Economics) and in the Health Sciences Center.

Minimum qualifications are: 1) Possession of an earned doctoral degree in Political Science, Government, Public Policy, Public Health, or related field by August 2015, and 2) a research specialization in Health Policy or Politics.

Preferred qualifications are 1. demonstrated excellence in conducting substantively and theoretically significant empirical research; 2. demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Political Science and Public Policy; 3. demonstrated expertise in health politics and/or policy, broadly defined, including health disparities; 4. capacity to add to the intellectual breadth of the department; and 5. strong methodological expertise 6. a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
