Global Management of Social Issues

 

Social innovation is characterized more and more by interdisciplinary, international and projectbased approaches that address the world's current complex societal challenges, such as climate change, global warming, the use of energy and renewable energy, sustainable consumption, inequality and poverty. Such "wicked" problem areas concern multiple stakeholders and cover a longer time period, needing multiple iterations.

 

Job description

 

The mission of the candidate is to strengthen research and teaching of Tilburg School of Social

and Behavioral Sciences in the area of "Global Management of Social Issues" by:

  • elaborating a global/international/comparative perspective to studying and addressing complex societal issues
  • bringing and sharing deep expertise on one or more of the following “wicked” social problems: inequality, poverty, socio-economic differences in health care and well-being, labour market chances, safety/criminality, and/or sustainability.
  • Exploring new data analysis approaches. As an emerging new interdisciplinary field, data science provides new tools for analyzing social issues and evaluating interventions that aim at social innovation.

 

Apart from content-related expertise the candidate should have a solid background in current

methodological/statistical development and preferably have ample experience in an

interdisciplinary environment.

 

The candidate

 

Candidates for the position must have the following qualifications:

  • a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a related field;
  • evidence of sustained research achievement, reflected in peer-reviewed publications;
  • genuine interest in performing in an interdisciplinary research environment;
  • the ability to obtain and manage research grants/ experience or willingness to participate in research funding efforts;
  • excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching students, and a strong and demonstrable commitment to the organization and delivery of teaching
  • experience in assisting students and Phd’s and also being a coach and a role model for all female students, postdocs and associate professors
  • strong command of Dutch or the willingness to learn within 2 years
  • strong command of English (minimal C2 level)
  • preferable evidence of having successfully held a position of academic leadership.

 

The candidate is expected to:

  • meet the criteria in terms of research quality, teaching quality, management responsibilities, proven valorization of their research and active role as member of department;
  • take an active role as role-model or diversity agent in the university (e.g. by delivering a public lecture during the course of their tenure track; by making their research available for a larger audience; by mentoring other junior faculty and students; by incorporating diversity as an integral part in teaching and/or research).

 

Conditions of Employment

 

The five-year Philip Eijlander Diversity Program comprises:

  • A position ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as full professor (hoogleraar 2), with a gross yearly salary range between € 72.836 - € 106.051 or as Associate professor (UHD 2 or 1), with a gross yearly salary range between € 65.760 - € 87.908 depending on your experience and qualification;
  • A start-up research grant of max € 10.000;
  • A mentoring /coaching program to facilitate the career path of the fellow in her career;
  • A networking program, with an inspirational writing week.

     

Tilburg University offers competitive European salaries. For researchers coming from outside the Netherlands, the university can apply for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of taxable salary under certain conditions. The university offers very good fringe benefits.

The most promising candidates will be invited to Tilburg to present and discuss their work with relevant members of TSB. A short scientific lecture and / or a trial class might be part of the selection procedure.
