The studentships are intended for candidates with an interest in the comparative study of public service delivery and governance. Drawing on the multi-disciplinary expertise of both leading policy practitioners and senior academics at Strathclyde, coordinated by the new IPPI Centre for Government and Public Sector Policy, this package of new PhD studentships is part of a research initiative to critically examine the development of managerial frameworks for the design and delivery of public services. Taking a comparative approach, doctoral research projects to be funded under this scheme are expected to consider as part of their work the distinctiveness and value of the collaborative, outcomes-based Scottish model for public services. We are inviting proposals for research projects across a range of possible themes – whether focusing on particular policy areas, like Health, or issues of administrative capacity and efficiency, public perception of accountability and performance and trust in public sector bodies, or the political economy of public service delivery. In order to maintain the multidisciplinary orientation of the research, supervision will be chaired by a member of the GPP academic staff, with a co-supervisor from another discipline/ Faculty, including the Strathclyde Business School, the leading Business School in Scotland. The supervisory team will be completed by an expert practitioner from the policy community. The multi-disciplinary supervisory team, complemented by engagement with a policy practitioner from the outset, is a key distinctive feature of this innovative programme.

Details The studentships cover EU fees and a stipend for three years. Applicants should normally enjoy EU tuition fee status. Overseas students can apply by demonstrating that they have secured sufficient additional funds to cover the difference between EU and oversee fees. Lead supervision will be provided through an international and vibrant School of Government and Public Policy and the successful applicants will be a core element of the multi-disciplinary Centre for Government and Public Sector Policy. The School also integrates the interdisciplinary European Policies Research Centre, and whose faculty have a distinguished track record of international research excellence, particularly in the areas of comparative politics, public policy, public opinion and representation. The School’s research is recognised internationally both for its academic excellence and for its relevance to policymakers.
